My name is Nikki and I’ve been working at York English as a Senior Teacher for the past year and a half. I’ve been teaching at the XiHu branch the entire duration of my contract and absolutely love it! Back in the USA I was a high school history teacher but decided that I wanted to do the career I love and travel. That’s when I chose to get TEFL/TESOL certified and teach abroad.
Though I had lived in China once before, I knew I wanted to live in a new city that had a similar weather climate as my native state of Florida. Fuzhou and York were quickly referred to me by my recruiter and, after reading more about the city and company, I knew this was the job for me. York is very accommodating whether it’s your first or fifteenth time in China. They make you feel right at home and have Chinese staff ready to help you with anything you could need in your first couple of months here.
While being here I’ve managed to save up money while at the same time sending money back home to help pay student loans and bills. Traveling and sightseeing are great weekend adventures that can be done within in the city or in neighboring cities. York also sponsors two school trips per year to different places in China to help our teachers get a better glimpse into the Chinese culture.
Though sometimes the culture may be a bit strange, adjusting isn’t hard and it helps you with learning new ways of life and a new language! York has, by far, been one of the most beneficial, enriching and enlightening experiences in my life and I plan on staying with the company to see it grow.
