I’m Emma Power, I’m 23 and a Drama and Scriptwriting graduate from Belfast. I started teaching at York, Ping Dong branch in late June 2016, so have been with the school for 7 months.
York English has been the most amazing start to a career in teaching with a dynamic workforce, constant support and a drive to always develop as a company. When the opportunity to teach in China arose I was faced with deciding between many schools, all with varying standards, age groups and curriculums. I interviewed with four schools but it was only during my interview with Lucas at York that I immediately knew that this was the company for me. It was very refreshing for an interviewer to speak with such enthusiasm not only about their school but also the location, the people, the food, the culture and to ask so much about me.
Being a Drama graduate I knew that a school with a strict and sterile approach to education wasn’t for me and with York the importance of fun in the classroom was always emphasised. I get excited to come into work everyday and work with likeminded people in a relaxed and friendly environment. Also knowing that if I ever have any issues with my accommodation, health or general day-to-day errands I always have someone to call and ask for help.
Since arriving at York English I have received the Teachers Excellence Award- a prize that is granted biannually at the summer and winter teachers dinner. This award looks for teachers that have gone above and beyond their job role, held a high retention rate of students and excelled both in and out of the classroom. It’s great that York acknowledges this effort and rewards their staff.
